These guys made it happen on ride day. And it's all caught on camera!

Ken Putnam, owner of Ken's Bike Shop in Winston-Salem talks about the ride as it was, and how it came to be what it is today.

Three kinds of folks showed up for the benefit: those who love someone diagnosed with cancer, those who love biking and a combination of the two.

2014 Ride Cancelled:

Beginning in the 1980's Ken Putnam, of Ken's Bike Shop, began a New Year's Day bike ride, a metric century, to help local riders kick off the New Year.  In 2006, he gave this ride to Cancer Services as a way to celebrate cancer survivors and raise funds for the upcoming year of service.  During that time, Cancer Services has raised thousands of dollars and we appreciate the many years of dedication and loyalty from each rider, volunteer, and sponsor as we honored and celebrated cancer survivors in our community.

With each year of planning the Polar Bear Ride, there was always excitement, because it was a celebration and cancer patients would be honored and supported in many ways. In the past ten years, we've had to cancel multiple rides due to the unpredictable weather. We have also heard significant safety concerns from cyclists and police officers concerning early morning driver and road conditions after New Year's Eve celebrations.  Therefore, we will not have a Polar Bear Ride in 2014.  Moving forward, Cancer Services will be shifting our energies away from a New Year's Day ride, and working to create another event within the cycling community that can celebrate survivorship, raise much needed funds, and provide a safe and festive venue for health and wellness.

This is a difficult decision, but we also want to consider the time and commitment of our volunteers and staff during the holiday season.  Cancer Services has been flooded with support from our cycling community and we are very encouraged by the idea of shifting some of our energies and commitment to an ongoing Solar Bear Ride.  We will keep you posted as plans progress.

We appreciate your understanding and the passion you have for Cancer Services and our mission "To enhance the quality of life for those living with cancer and to provide the gift of life through education".

Sincerely,

Cancer Services, Inc.
